HeavyFeet are the Manchester-based production and DJ duo busy rewriting the rulebook for new artists and the level of success that can be achieved in a short period of time. Having established themselves within a pioneering house music movement that focuses on fun and energy, the double act are now creating nothing short of a musical tidal wave by incorporating the sounds of rave, breakbeat, garage and drum ‘n’ bass into their sets and taking it to appreciative club audiences and house music fans.
With an ever expanding DJ set-up currently consisting of decks, FX, laptop, controllers and the regular addition of Goldie’s choice hype man, Switch MC, as well as remixes and original material released by some of the hottest indie and major record labels in the game, HeavyFeet are energetically bubbling away crafting a sound they firmly believe to be the next big thing.
Coming from two largely different creative backgrounds, Mike, rooted in composition and music theory, combines forces with James’ DJ persona to form HeavyFeet, a music production force capable of smashing the sonic barrier. Not surprisingly, the likes of Drop The Lime, Utah Saints, Trevor Loveys, Micky Slim, AC Slater and Tommie Sunshine (to name a varied few) are vocally lending their support to the bass-heavy, hooligan house sounds of HeavyFeet, whilst The Loose Cannons (Kiss FM) and Andi Durrant (Galaxy FM) provide a steady support arm for FM radio exposure. In addition, the ascending hype levels surrounding the double act have quickly risen through the web world, with MySpace and blog sites playing a crucial role.
Constantly striving to push their sound in new directions, consistent support from both established producers and keen, clued-up music fans has brought the confidence needed for HeavyFeet to develop many new and creative ideas from inside their self-built studio. Despite the considerable time spent in this studio, record labels worldwide are currently in the ‘please hold’ queue for the HeavyFeet remix treatment such is the demand - their gut-ripping basslines hammering away underneath 90s breakbeats and old-skool synth stabs coupled with their trademark percussion shuffles and vocal cuts are fast becoming a must have for all! Their recent remixes of Sonny J’s ‘Handsfree’ for EMI and 3 Is A Crowd’s ‘Take It Back’ were both stamped as a 5* ‘recommended release’ in IDJ magazine as well as the boys being noted as ‘stars for the future…’
Alongside a recent HeavyFeet remix for MC Flipside hitting No.6 on the Top 100 Beatport Chart (No.1 Electro House Chart) and insert forthcoming HeavyFeet reworkings for majors like Universal, plus a host of cool indie labels such as Drop The Lime’s Trouble & Bass imprint, Aquasky’s Passenger Records, Micky Slim’s recently founded Bombsquad label, and the likes of This Is Music, Palms Out Sounds and Menu Music into the forthcoming releases list, there really is little doubt that you’ll be able to avoid the thudding kick drum of this globetrotting production duo for a huge amount longer.
Away from the studio, HeavyFeet relish the opportunity to throw down their sound to appreciative club audiences, with James manning the decks and Mike at the electronic mainframe. Recent months have seen the duo take their bassline-driven DJ sets and performances with Switch MC to a myriad of places whilst supporting MSTRKRFT, Switch, Hervé, Trevor Loveys, Rico Tubbs, Micky Slim and Boy 8-Bit, amongst others. Such UK gigs have ranged in location from Exeter to Edinburgh, with regular appearances in the big clubbing cities of Leeds, London and their hometown Manchester, with a residency held with uber cool clubbing brand, Spectrum, in Nottingham and the Midlands. In recent months HeavyFeet have taken their sound abroad to France, Germany and Spain, as well as continuing dates throughout the basement clubs of the UK. Currently in the pipeline are mini-tours across the US and Australia, dates across Norway and Poland plus further expansion of their live set-up, which will see the launch of ‘HeavyFeet Presents…’ featuring turntablist wizardry and guest vocalists involved in forthcoming studio projects, appearing alongside the ever growing technical two-man DJ foundation.
Just over a year after their inception, HeavyFeet already have a discography as long as your arm and a busy gig calendar. Things are moving at a frightening rate, so expect much more in terms of releases and remixes, as well as massive developments in their live show from this duo in the future. World domination surely beckons!
